The CREE Project: Investigating User Requirements for Searching within Institutional Environments

TheContextualResourceEvaluationEnvironment(CREE)projecthasinvestigateduserrequirementsforthepresentationofarangeofdifferentInternet-basedsearchtoolsinavarietyoflocalinstitutionalenvironments,enablingaccesstothesearchtoolsawayfromtheirhomewebsites.Theproject'sthree-strandapproachtoitsinvestigationincludedasurvey,focusgroupsandusertesting.TheinvestigationrevealedthatthereismuchinterestintheideaofusingInternetsearchtoolsthroughinstitutionalenvironments,althoughthisinterestistingedwithsomeuncertaintyonthepartofend-usersabouttheexactpurposeorneedforpresentingsearchtoolsthisway.Presentationofsearchtoolsthroughinstitutionalenvironmentsdoes,though,increaseend-userawarenessofwhatsearchtoolsareavailableandpotentiallydrawsthemintousingnewresources.
