Using MPEG-21 DIP and NISO OpenURL for the Dynamic Dissemination of Complex Digital Objects in the Los Alamos National Laboratory Digital Library

ThispaperfocusesontheuseofNISOOpenURLandMPEG-21DigitalItemProcessing(DIP)todisseminatecomplexobjectsandtheircontainedassets,inarepositoryarchitecturedesignedfortheResearchLibraryoftheLosAlamosNationalLaboratory.Inthearchitecture,theMPEG-21DigitalItemDeclarationLanguage(DIDL)isusedastheXML-basedformattorepresentcomplexdigitalobjects.Throughaningestionprocess,theseobjectsarestoredinamultitudeofautonomousOAI-PMHrepositories.AnOAI-PMHcompliantRepositoryIndexkeepstrackofthecreationandlocationofallthoserepositories,whereasanIdentifierResolverkeepstrackofthelocationofindividualcomplexobjectsandcontainedassets.AnMPEG-21DIPEngineandanOpenURLResolverfacilitatethedeliveryofvariousdisseminationsofthestoredobjects.WhiletheseaspectsofthearchitecturearedescribedinthecontextoftheLANLlibrary,thepaperwillalsobrieflytouchontheirmoregeneralapplicability.
