Serum Levels of IL-10 before and after blood donation

Introduction: IL-10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine produced by Th2 lymphocytes and macrophages and exerts its action on T cells, NK cells and macrophages. Objective: To determine serum levels of interleukin 10 (IL-10) before and after blood donation. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 20 blood donors of both sexes, between 18 to 60 years of age. Serum concentrations of IL-10 were determined before blood donation, 24 hours afterwards and 12 days after blood donation, using enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Results: The average serum concentrations of IL-10 were: before donation 12.63 pg / mL, 13.86 pg / mL 4.88 pg / mL 24 hours and 12 days after blood donation respectively. There were not statistically significant differences (p> 0.05) in each study group. Conclusions: No significant changes were found in seric levels of IL10 after blood donation, possibly attributable to the low levels of T cell activation expected in healthy individuals whose immune system is working optimally.
