Bubble formation is a widely known phenomenon in thermal joining of thermoplastics to metals. A novel half-section setup was used for high-speed recordings directly in the joining zone to gain time-dependent information on water- and degradation-based bubble formation. Based on these results, a generally valid description of the bubbles and its behavior in thermal joining is given.
