Our planet is rushing towards a post-antibiotic eraand the global burden of antimicrobial resistance isestimated to rise to 10 million annual deaths by 2050, 1a figure that can substantially increase if adequatemeasures are not taken. Antimicrobial resistance is anancient but complex phenomenon that emerges inresponse to antimicrobial exposure. The abundanceof existing scientific publications on antimicrobialresistance in an environmental context supports itsinclusion in the planetary health agenda. Unfortunately, antimicrobial resistance is still a public health concernand it has not been considered a priority area to workon from an ecological perspective. Ecologists and Earthscientists have not been made aware of this situationand have not been included in discussions of controlstrategies between public health experts and socialscientists.
