Transistors can be realized on the basis of different physical phenomena and by using accordingly adjusted device configurations and material selection, which leads to the distinction of several types of transistors, e.g., unipolar, or field-effect transistors and bipolar transistors. This article introduces four papers that discuss various transistor systems. The first paper deals with CMOS transistors and the development of technology from planar to non-planar. The second paper deals with the challenge of using transistors as power switches with megawatt rating. The third paper focuses on thin-film transistors and the fourth deals with transistors and photodetectors based on graphene.
