This is the first of a series of articles on practice-related aspects of pharmacology, drug therapy, and applied nursing pharmacology, in which a broad overview is given of the role of the nursing practitioner in the management of drug preparations and treatment. This high-level overview is presented against the backdrop of a proposed contextual framework, which explores the interaction between the various role players involved in prescribing, supplying, dispensing and administering medication to a patient, and subsequently monitoring the effects thereof. This series uses permitted excerpts and diagrams from the second edition of Pharmacology in clinical practice: application made easy for nurses and allied health professionals , published by Juta and Company Limited, and is compiled and expanded upon by the author.
