ZBTB16 and metabolic syndrome: a network perspective.

Metabolic syndrome is a prevalent, complex condition. Thesearch for genetic determinants of the syndrome is currentlyundergoing a paradigm enhancement by adding systems geneticsapproaches to association studies. We summarize the currentevidence on relations between an emergent new candidate, zincfinger and BTB domain containing 16 (ZBTB16) transcriptionfactor and the major components constituting the metabolicsyndrome. Information stemming from studies on experimentalmodels with altered Zbtb16 expression clearly shows its effecton adipogenesis, cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis, lipid levelsand insulin sensitivity. Based on current evidence, we providea network view of relations between ZBTB16 and hallmarks ofmetabolic syndrome in order to elucidate the potential functionallinks involving the ZBTB16 node. Many of the identified genesinterconnecting ZBTB16 with all or most metabolic syndromecomponents are linked to immune function, inflammation oroxidative stress. In , ZBTB16 represents a promisingpleiotropic candidate node for metabolic syndrome.
