Women’s experiences in small scale fish processing in Lake Feferuwa fishing community, Nasarawa State, Nigeria

AccesstoproductiveresourcesamongwomenfishprocessorsinLakeFeferuwafishingcommunity,NasarawaState,Nigeriawasstudiedusingcross-sectionaldata.Purposivesamplingtechniquewasusedtoselect50respondentsforthestudy.SimpledescriptivestatisticsandLikertscalewereusedfordataanalysis.Therespondents#8217;majorreasonforinvolvementinfishprocessingistogenerateincomeforpaymentofchildren#8217;sschool/medicalfees.Resultsalsorevealedthatwomenhadbetteraccesstofishproduction/fishing(mean=0.62).Theiraccesstoextensionservices/training(mean=0.28),capital(mean=0.12),moderntechnologies(mean=0.04)andruralinstitutions(mean=0.00)werelimited.Themajorconstraintsfacedbywomenfishprocessorswerelackofcollateraltoobtainbankloan,lackofmodernfishprocessingfacilities,inadequateextensionservicesandinadequatefishstoragefacilities.Themajoroccupationalhazardreportedbytherespondentswasredness/swellingofeye.Itwasrecommendedthateducatingrespondentsonhowtoformandmanagecooperativesocietiescanenablethemhavebetteraccesstosomeproductiveresources.
