Major gastrointestinal nematodes of cattle in dairy farms in Dire Dawa administration, eastern Ethiopia

Gastrointestinalnematodeinfectionsareamongthemajorhealthproblemslimitingtheproductivityindairycattle.AcrosssectionalstudywasconductedfromOctober2014toMay2015,toestimatetheprevalenceandidentifythemajorgeneraofnematodesindairycattlefarmsinDireDawaAdministration,easternEthiopia.Atotalof384fecalsamplesfromdairycattlewerecollectedandexaminedfornematodeinfectionusingstandardcoprologicalmethods.Outofthese,203(52.9%)animalswerefoundpositiveforoneormixednematodeinfection.Specifically,Trichostrongylus(20.1%),Strongyliods(16.1%),Oesophagostomum(13.3%),Haemonchus(10.9%),Dictyocaulus(9.4%)andTrichuris(4.9%)weretheidentifiedgeneraindescendingorderofprevalence.Theproportionofmixedinfectionwas97(25.26%).ThehighestpercentagewasrecordedwithTrichostrongylusandDictyocaulus13(13.4%).Amongthepotentialassociatedriskfactors,historyofde-worming(p=0.00)andbodycondition(p=0.02)werefoundsignificantlyassociatedwiththeoccurrenceofnematodeinfection.Sourceofanimals,ageandbreedoftheanimalsrevealednosignificantrelationwithprevalenceofnematodes.Thedegreeofinfectionrevealedthatmajority(50.74%)oftheexaminedanimalsweremoderatelyinfectedwithnematodeparasite.Therefore,strategicde-wormingshouldbepracticedinthedairyfarms.
