Characterization of milk production systems using dormant alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

DairyfarmingisthemaineconomicactivitydevelopedinPuno;thissituationallowsPuno#8217;sdairybasinpossessahugepotentialintheshortandmediumtermfuture.ThereforeoneofthealternativeshasbeenimplementedsincemorethanadecadeagobyCaritasandregionalinitiativesconsistinginintroductiondormantalfalfaW350avarietyadaptedfortheandesupto4200m.a.s.l.,howeverlackofsupportandknowledgeinthefarmers,whodon#8217;tcalculatetheirincomesandexpenses,norecordsofanyproductionortoproducequalitymilkstandavoidingempowermenttoenablethemtoimprovetheirqualitylife.ThefollowingresearchwasconductedindistrictsofAcora,Atuncolla,PaucarcollaandMa?azointheprovinceofPuno,TaracoinHuancane,PucarainLampa,andAyaviriinMelgarinordertodeterminethecostofmilkproduction.Thecostofproductionofthefarmersfirstwasclassifiedin3groupsaccordingaclusteranalysis,thecostdeterminedforthesmall,mediumandlargefarmerwasUS$0.30,0.26and0.25/lofmilkrespectively.Asecondclassificationdetermined2groups,theefficientwithatleast40%ofthepopulationintheherdrepresentedbylactatingcowswithUS$0.26/lofmilkandthelessefficientwithUS$0.31/lofmilk.ThisstudyconcludesthatthecostofmilkproductioninPunowheredormantalfalfait#8217;susedasapastureforageislessincomparisonwiththeintensivesystemastheonecalculatedbyAGALEP(2007)US$0.52/lofmilkortheGobiernoRegionaldeArequipa(2009)US$0.47/lofmilk.
