Major ectoparasites of cattle in Ada’a district, East Showa Zone, Ethiopia

ThestudywasconductedfromOctober,2013toApril,2014inAda#8217;adistrict,EastShowaZone,Ethiopiawiththeobjectivesofdeterminingprevalenceofmajorectoparasitesandexaminingassociationbetweenectoparasitesinfestationandbreed,age,sex,bodyconditionandproductionsystem.Outof384cattleexamined222(57.8%)wereinfestedbyoneormorespeciesofectoparasites.nbsp;Theectoparasitesidentifiedwereticks(37.2%),lice(7.6%)andmites(1.6%)andmixedinfestation(11.5%)wasalsorecorded.Boophilusdecoloratus(19.2%)wasthecommontickspeciesfollowedby,Amblyomavariegatum(6.0%),Hyalomamarginatum(6.0%)andRhipicephalusevertsi(6.0%).Linognathusvituli(7.6%)wastheonlyspeciesofliceidentifiedinthisstudy.nbsp;AmongthemitesspeciesDemodexbovis(1.3%)wasthemostprevalentfollowedbyPsoroptusbovis(0.3%).Theprevalenceofectoparasitessignificantlyvariedamongbreedsofcattlewithexoticbreedofcattlehavingasignificantlyhigherrateofectoparasitesinfestation83%(#967;2=20.0;P=0.00)ascomparedtolocal(55.5%)andcross(41%)breedsofcattle.Significantlyhigherprevalenceofectoparasites(#967;2=12.7;P=0.00)wasobservedinyoung(74.2%)thaninadult(52.9%)cattle.Likewise,significantlyhigherprevalenceofectoparasitesinfestation(#967;2=44.6;P=0.00)wasobservedinpoor(71.3%)andmedium(68.8)comparedtocattleofgoodbodyconditiongroup(33.9%).TheprevalenceofBoophilusdecoloratusinfestationincattleofmedium(24.7%)bodyconditiongroupwassignificantly(#967;2=6.92;P=0.03)higherascomparedtothoseofgoodbody(12.6%)conditionscore.Amblyomavariegatuminfestationwassignificantly(#967;2=5.81;P=0.02)higherinsemiintensiveproductionsystemthaninextensivefarmingsystem.Similarly,Rhipicephalusevertsiprevalencewashighestinmedium(9.4%)bodyconditionscoregroupthaninpoor(3.4%)andgood(3.1%)bodycodition(#967;2=6.35;P=0.04).Furthermore,Linognathusvituliinfestationwassignificantlyhigherinlocal(8.9%)andcross(7.7%)breedsofcattlecomparedtoexoticbreed.
