Study of the operation of the agro-forestry-pastoral system in northeastern Algeria by a typology

Thestudydescribesandanalyzestheoperationof85farmslocatedintheWetlandnortheasternAlgeria.Thetypologydistinguishesfivegroups:pastoralistsoftheplain(G1:35),cattlesmallpasoralistsofthelake(G2:9),bigagro-forestrypastoralists(Ontheoutskirtsofaforest)(G3:25),forestpastoralists(intheforest)(G4:7)andsheepfatteners(G5:11).Livestockmodelsarebasedonsocial,economicandecologicaldynamics.ThelowproportionofAAU(AgriculturalAreaUtilized)requires61%offarmers(mostansweredwereinG1,G2,G4)tomovetowardsaveryextensivetypeofbreeding.Theyrelyonthediversityofthenaturalvegetationavailableatdifferenttimesoftheyear,tofeedtheirlivestockthroughouttheyear.BreedersGroup3whichexternalrevenues,operatinglargesurfaces(22,88haonaverage)andraisethemostimportantlivestock.Theycombinethenaturalgrazing,cropresiduesandforageareaforthebasicneedsoftheiranimalswithlowstockingrateonagriculturalandprivatespace(fallowandpermanentgrassland)(1,15-0,7LU/ha).Group5thatcanbeconsideredasaseasonalpracticefatteningsheepforl#8217;A?dElKebir.Thesebreedersandenterthecompetitionfortheuseofnaturalresourceswithlocalproductionsystemswithahighstockingrate(2.8LU/ha)oncollectivemeadowsfor3months.
