Leucaenaleucocephalaandcactus(Opuntiasp.)wereevaluatedasforagesforrabbitsbasedongrowth,feedutilization,gastrointestinaltract(GIT)development,andcarcasstraits.Atotalof64purebredAltexandNewZealandWhiteweanlingrabbitswerefedfor42d.Experimentaldietswere100,90,80or70%commercialpelletswithcorrespondinglevelsof0,10,20or30%leucaenaleaves(drymatterbasis),fedeitherwithorwithoutcactusofferedadlibitum.Weeklygrowthresponseslopesvariedbydietbutnotbreed.Controlrabbits(100%pelletsfedadlibitumwithandwithoutcactus)hadimprovedaveragedailygainsby9.0g/d(P0.01),reached1,800gminimummarketweightearlierby6.5d(P0.05),andhadheavier42-dfinalweightsby371g(P0.01)thanrabbitsfedleucaenawithandwithoutcactus.Ingeneral,cactusdidnotsignificantlyinfluenceanyofthetraitsstudied.Pelletandgross(pelletplusforage)feedintakeperformanceincontrolversusforage-fedpensdependedonwhethercactuswasincludedinthediets(P0.05).However,independentofthecactuseffect,conversionofgrossfeedtototalgainswasimprovedincontrolversusforage-fedpens(P0.01).Rabbitsfed10%leucaena(withandwithoutcactus)hadhigherpelletandgrossfeedintakelevels(P0.01),whereasnodifferencesexistedbetween20and30%leucaenadiets.Rabbitsonthe20and30%leucaenawithcactusdietsnumericallyconsumedtheleastquantityofpelletsperunitofbodygain.Controlanimalshad2.0%highercarcass(P0.05),0.85%lowerGIT(P0.01),and0.14%lowerstomach(P=0.07)weightsaspercentagesofpre-slaughterweightthananimalsfed30%leucaenawithandwithoutcactus.CarcassandGITtraitsweresimilarbetweencontrolanimalsfedonlypelletsandthosefedpelletsandcactus(P0.05).Rabbitsfed30%leucaenawithcactushad2.7%highercarcassweight(P0.05)andtendedtohave1.0%higherpeltweight(P0.10)comparedtothosefed30%leucaenawithoutcactus.Breedswerenotdifferentforgrowth,GITandcarcasstraits(P0.05).Nosignsofhairlossordiscoloredliversorurineduetopossiblemimosinetoxicitywereobservedin30%leucaena-fedrabbits.Hence,itisrecommendedforsmall-scaleproducersthatthefeedinglevelofleucaena(withina0to30%range)shoulddependoneconomicsintermsofrealizedfeedcostsavingsinrelationtogrowthresponse.
