The keeping of poultry and pigs in the backyards of the urbanised areas of Iztapalapa (east of Mexico City) as a proposal for sustainable production

AsurveywasdonetocharacterisethekeepingofpoultryandpigsinthebackyardsoftheurbanisedareasofIztapalapaattheeastofMexicoCity.Theresultsdemonstratethatbackyardproductioniscarriedoutwithinthevicinityofthehouseorhabitation.Thenumberofbirdskeptrangedfrom1to110;thelargestfrequencywasfoundwithinthevalueof1-10birds.Inrelationtotheproductionofpigs,thenumberofanimalswasconcentratedwithintherangeof1-5pigs.Thesystemoffeedingofbothspecieswasbasedontheuseofrestaurantwastes,staletortillas,maize,wheatgrainsandalfalfa.Theobjectiveofpoultryandpigproductionwasfoundtobefundamentallyforsubsistenceuseandforsavingmoneyforemergencies.Thecharacterofthesystemisdiscussedintermsofaproposalforitssustainability.
