Grazingsystemsandbreedcompositionareincreasinglychangingwithlivestockdevelopmentstakingplaceintsetse-infestedareasofEasternUganda.Across-sectionalstudywasthereforeconductedinSorotiandBugiridistrictsfromJunetoAugust2009toassesstheprevalenceoftrypanosomeinfectionsinNkediZebu,AnkoleandFriesian/Zebucrosses(Crosses)keptundertetheringandopengrazingsystems.Atotalof2362cattlewerebledandexaminedfortrypanosomeinfectionsusingboththeHaematocritcentrifugationtechnique(HCT)andBuffycoattechnique(BCT).Thefindingsrevealedthatcattlekeptunderopengrazing(n=1612)hadalowermeanpackedcellvolume(PCV)(28.6%95%CI28.4-28.6)andahigherprevalenceoftrypanosomeinfection(7.3%)thanthosekeptundertethering(n=451):meanPCV-30.2%(95%CI29.7-30.7)andprevalence-6.7%.Overall,NkediZebuhadthehighestprevalence(7.2%),followedbyAnkole(7%)andCrosses(0%).TherewasnodifferencebetweenthemeanPCVofNkediZebu(29.0%95%CI28.8-29.2)andAnkole(28.8%95%CI28.0-29.6),whichwerehigherthanthatofCrosses(27.7%95%CI24.5-30.8).Trypanosomavivaxwasthedominantspecies(62%),followedbyT.congolense(20%),mixedtrypanosomeinfection(14%)andT.brucei(4%).Inconclusion,tsetseandtrypanosomosisstrategiesinUgandathatrelyontsetsecontrolbyuseoftsetsetrappingorinsecticidetreatmentoflivestockintegratedwithchemotherapy,couldbeimprovedbymakingthembreedandgrazingsystemfocused.
