Intestinal parasitic infections of camels in the agro and pastoral areas of northern Tanzania

TheprevalenceoffaecalintestinalparasiteeggsandspeciesspectrumwasstudiedinrelationtohostandmanagementvariablesincamelsinthenorthernTanzania.Atotalof193camelsofallageandsexwereexaminedbetweenJuneandAugust2010.Collectedfaecalsampleswereprocessedbysedimentationandfloatationmethodsandthenexaminedforhelmintheggs.Coprologicalexaminationrevealedthat62.7%(n=121)ofthecamelsexcretedhelmintheggsintheirfaeces.nbsp;Eleventypesofhelminth/protozoanparasiteseggs/oocystencounteredindescendingorderofprevalencewere,Strongylussp89.2%,Trichostrongylussp27.3%,coccidia9.9%,Strongyloidessp6.6%,Anaplocephalasp3.3%,Oxyurissp2.5%,Dictyocaulussp2.5%,Gastrodiscussp2.5%,Parascarissp1.65%,Trichonemasp0.83%andTriodontophorussp0.83%.Single(64%)andconcurrentinfectionswithtwo,threeandfourparasiteswererecordedin25.6%,8.26%and1.65%respectivelyofthecases.Allthefactorsexceptsource,bodyconditionscoreandhealthstatusaffectedsignificantly(atleastP0.05)theprevalenceofgastrointestinalparasiteinfections.Thehighprevalenceandwidespectrumobservedinthepresentstudysuggeststhathelminthinfectionarewidespreadatthefarms/herdsexaminedandmaybeaconstrainttoeconomiccamelproductioninthecountryandthereisneedtoinstitutecontrolmeasures.
