Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoinvestigatetheeffectofsomefactorsonthereproductiveperformanceofsmallholderdairycowsunderartificialinsemination(AI)intworegionsofEthiopia.Across-sectionalstudyandretrospectivedataanalysiswereconductedon428farmcharacteristicsandmanagement,644cowreproductivehistoriesand613inseminationsbyexaminingrecordsandaquestionnairesurvey.Meandaysforcalvingtofirstserviceinterval(CFSI)andcalvingtoconceptioninterval(CCI)were222(n=320)and257(n=234)days,respectively.Serviceperconception(SPC)was1.54andfirstserviceconceptionrate(FSCR)was41.8%.Therelationshipbetweenreproductiveperformanceandriskfactorswasdescribedbyusingproportionofsubmittedcowstofirstservicebyday201aftercalving(SUB201),pregnantcowsbyday228aftercalving(PREG228)andnonpregnantcowsbyday305aftercalving(NPREG305).TheproportionsforSUB201,PREG228andNPREG305were35%,28%and52%,respectively.Site,bodyconditionscore(BCS)andmanagementsystemswereassociatedtoSUB201,PREG228andNPREG305.TheoddsforBCS3tothatofBCS3were0.379,0.297and2.03forSUB201,PREG228andNPREG305,respectively.Farmswithintensivemanagementsystemhadoddsof1.99,1.77and0.533forSUB201,PREG228andNPREG305,respectivelytothatofextensivelymanagedfarms.TheperformanceoftheAIserviceintheareahadassociationtoSUB201andNPREG305.BCS,ageofthecow,managementsystemandAIserviceperformancewerefactorstoaffectthereproductiveperformanceofthesmallholderdairyfarms.Thus,increasingreproductiveperformanceshouldovercomethechallengeofnutritionalandAImanagement.
