AsurveywascarriedoutinHaitownabattoirduringtheperiodofAugust2004toAugust2005(13months)inordertoestimateprevalenceandeconomicimportanceofbovinefascioliasisinslaughteredcattle.PrevalenceoffascioliasiswascalculatedasthenumberfoundinfectedwithFasciola,expressedasthepercentageofthetotalnumberofcattleslaughtered.Atotalof2114cattleoriginatingfromWeruweru#8211;secondarymarketandlocallivestocktraderswereexamined.nbsp;Threehundredandfortyonelivers(16.1%)ofthesecattlewerecondemnedforvariousreasons.Twohundredninetyseven(14.05%)wereinfectedwithFasciola.Themonthlyincidencewashighestduringtheperiodimmediatelybeforeandafteronsetoftheshortrain(Vuli).Thetotaleconomiclossincurredasaresultofcondemnationofinfectedliversduetoallcausesandfascioliasiswasapproximately2,096US$and1,780US$respectively(1US$equiv.toTsh1,116/=).Lossesduetoweightlosswereestimatedtobe5,943US$.Findingofthisstudysuggestthatfascioliasisisprevalentincattle,thatitcausesgreateconomiclossesasaresultofcondemnationofliversandcarcassweightloss.Localclimaticfactors,cattletrade,localmanagementpracticesbyvariousethnicgroups,presenceofsnailintermediatehostsareprobablythemainfactorsinfluencingtheincidenceofdiseaseinthepresentareaofstudy.nbsp;nbsp;It#8217;sconcludedthatparasites(includingFasciolaspp)contributesignificantlytomeatlossincattleraisedinTanzaniaandthereforemoreeffortsareneededtominimizesuchlossandsavevaluableproteinrichfoodneededbythegrowingpopulationofTanzania.
