Twoexperimentsweredesignedtorunconcurrentlyusing56CreolemalekidsofGuadeloupetoassesstheeffectsoffeedingmodesuponcarcasstraits.Inthefirstexperimentkidswererearedafterweaninginarotationallygrazedtropicalpastures(P)atameanstockingrateof1200kgLW/hawithoutsupplements.Inthesecondexperimentkidswerefedinstall(S)andreceivedchoppedtropicalfodderandcommercialpellets(50%ofdietDM).Inbothexperimentstwogroupsofkidsweredeterminedonthebasisoftheiraveragedailygain(ADG)beforeweaning(at87d):lowlevel(L)andhighlevel(H).ThustreatmentsweredefinedasLPvs.HPandLSvs.HS.KidsofPexperimentwereslaughteredattheendof8monthsofgrowth,whereaskidsofSexperimentwereslaughteredassoonasthemeanliveweightofthegroupreached19to20kg.nbsp;TheweightsatweaningandatslaughterofLPvs.HPkidswere8.4vs.10.6(P0.01)and18.4vs.18.7(P0.05),respectively.ThecorrespondingvaluesforLSvs.HSkidswere7.6vs.9.1(P0.01)and20.8vs.19.4(P0.05).TheLSkidsspentsignificantlymoretimeinthefeedlotstallthantheHS(178vs.107days;P0.01).ThehotcarcassweightwassimilarforPkids(6.5kg)whileitwassignificantlyhigher(P0.05)forLSvs.HSgroup:9.5vs.8.2kg.Alsothegutcontentrepresented38%vs.31%ofthecarcassweight(P0.05)forLPvs.HPkids;valuesobtainedforLSandHSkidswere23%vs.27%(P0.05).Thusthetruecarcassyieldreached52%forPkidsand5pointsmoreforSkids(nosignificantdifferencewasobservedbetweengroupsofLvs.Hkids).ThecolourwasmainlypaleforPkidswhileitwaspinkforSkids.Conformationclassificationwas2.5and3forPandSgroups(scalefrom1to5).FatcoverscoreandfatweightsdidnotdiffersignificantlybetweenLandHkidswithinthePorSexperiment.Howeverthesevariablesseemtobelowerforpasturefedkidsagainstsupplementedkids:3and2timeslessforomentalandkidneyfat,respectively.Irrespectiveofthepre-weaningADGlevelorthefeedingmodetheproportionofthedifferentcutswassimilar;30%leg,20%shoulder,12%neck,12%breast.nbsp;ItwasconcludedthatthemodeoffeedingslightlyaffectedcarcassqualityandcompositionwhileithadamarkedinfluenceonliveandcarcassweightaswellasonthefullgutpercentageintheLW.Moreexperimentsareneededtodeterminethebestmodeoffeedingspeciallyforlowweightkids.
