Drymatteryield,chemicalcompositionandmineralcontentandnitrogendegradabilityoffourweeklycutgrass/legumemixtureswereevaluatedusingfistulatedN'damacattle.ForagesevaluatedwerecombinationsofPanicummaximum(PM)intercroppedwithStylosanthesguianensis(stylo),PMintercroppedwithAeschynomenehistrix(histrix),PM/stylomixture,PM/histrixmixture,solePM,Styloandhistrix.Theforageswerecultivatedinarandomizedcompleteblockdesignwiththreereplicates.Drymatteryield(Kg/ha)amongtreatmentsweresignificant(P0.05),themeanvaluerangedbetween1573kg/hainsolePMand2345kg/hainPMintercroppedwithstylo.Thecrudeproteinwasbetween7.63and8.85g/100gDM.Phosphorus,calcium,sodiumandironcontentofPMincreasedwhenintercroppedwithhistrixandstylo.Drymatterandproteindegradabilitycharacteristicsofforagewereevaluatedat0,6,12,24,48,72and96hoursusingtheequationP=a+b(1-e-ct).Theinsolublebutfermentablefraction,brangedfrom40.79insolePMdietto42.25g/100gDMinPM/histrixmixture(P0.05).Rateofdegradation,cof2.9%h-1wasobtainedinsolePMdiet,betterresultswereobtainedforthePM/legumemixturesandthesolelegumes.Potentialdegradabilityofsubstratesrangedfrom66.03inPMonlyto66.63g/100gDMinPM/histrixmixture.ProteindegradabilityofbwasbetterinPM/legumemixtures(P0.05)thanthePMonly.Themeanvaluesofcrangedfrom4.0%h-1inPMonlyto7.0%h-1inPM/stylomixture.Thepotentialdegradability,a+brangedfrom47.62inPMonlyto60.39g/100gDMinPM/stylomixture.Significantcorrelation(P0.05)existedbetweenbvalueofdrymatter(DM)andN-degradationaswellastheDMandCPcontentofthediets.ThepotentialdegradabilityvaluesofN-degradationandtheDMandCPcontentoftheproximatecompositionofthedietsweresignificantlycorrelated(P0.05).TheeffectivedegradationvaluesofDMandN-degradabilityoftheetherextractsandNitrogenFreeExtract(NFE)werehighlycorrelated(P0.01).ThisresultshowedthatintercroppingPanicummaximumwithAeschynomenehistrixorStylosanthesguianensiswouldresultinincreaseinthenutritionalstatusofthePanicummaximumandenhancesbetterdegradability.
