Dynamics and constraints of livestock production systems in Cam Giang district, Hai Duong Province, North Vietnam

InNorthernVietnam,thelivestockproductionsectorhasbeenstronglyencouragedtodevelopbythegovernmentformanyyearsasanimportantlivelihoodstrategytoalleviatehouseholdpoverty.Overthelastfewdecades,ithasbeendevelopedquickly,butremainedunsustainable.Thisstudyaimstoidentifythedynamicsoflivestockproductionsystemsduringtheeconomictransformationperiodandtheircurrentconstraintsasthebasicforsettingupsustainabledevelopmentpolicies.Asurvey,whichisbasedonparticipatoryandretrospectiveapproaches,wasconductedat38householdsintwocommunesofHaiDuongprovincein2010.Theresultsindicatedasignificantevolutionoflivestockproductionsystemsfromatraditionalsmall-scaleproductionsystemintoaspecializedintensiveoneduetothelandlawandthericelandconversionprogramin1990sandtheindustrializationandurbanizationprocessin2000s.Theintensificationoflivestockproductionsystem,whichisaccompaniedbytheincreasingdependenceonimportedinputsandthelimitedknowledgeandskillsinadequatetechniquesanddiseasemanagement,posesahugedifficultytoproducersindevelopingtheirlivestockproductionsystems.Therefore,thepriorityofdevelopmentpoliciesshouldbegiventothepromotionofthelocalresourceutilisationasfeedforanimalsandtotheimprovementoffarmers#8217;abilitytomanagetheirproductionthroughnotonlygovernmentsupportsbutalsoparticipationofsocialorganisationsandfarmers.
