Biomass production of natural courses in arid lands and their valorisation by the camels

Thearidareasarecharacterizedbyanannualrainfalllessthan150mm.Besidethisverylowquantity,rainisirregularoverthespace.Intheseconditions,thebiomassproductionisverylowinsomeplacesandabsentinothers.ThisstudywascarriedinAgadezarea(Niger),toassessthetotalfodderproductionofpastureaswellasthequantityconsumedbythecamel.nbsp;Thefodderproductionofthecourseswasstudiedbythemethodofquot;nbsp;integralcollectnbsp;quot;ofthegrasscontentsinnbsp;thequot;smallsquarequot;laidoutthroughthesurfacesampling.Thetreebiomassproductionwasestimatedbyusingsomequot;allometricregressionsquot;establishedforsometropicaltrees.nbsp;Thefeedsintakewasassessindirectlybychemicalanalysisofwasteemittedbyshe-camels(n=8)eatingonnaturalpastures.Theponderalperformancegrowthwasevaluatedmonthlybyweighingthecamelcalves(n=7)withanelectronicbalance.Theassessmentofthesefodderresourcesshowedanannualproductionof382±82.92kgDM.ha-1whichrepresentedglobally213.08±36.26UFL.ha-1and11.17±1.50kgofDCP.ha-1.Theingestionofthedrymatter(DM)onpasturevariesfrom1.20to2.19kgofDM100kgofbodyweightwithanaverageof1.63±0.28kgofDMby100kgofbodyweight.Despitethelowproductionoffodder,thecamelsrecordedaveryappreciabledailybodyprofitvaryingfrom277gto374g.nbsp;
