Assessment of surface water quality by water quality index (WQI) at the Cai Sao canal, An Giang province, Vietnam

Assessmentofsurfacewaterqualitybythewaterqualityindex(WQI)attheCaiSaocanal,AnGiangprovincewasconductedtoprovideadatabaseforplanningandmonitoringwaterqualityinthisregion.ThemonitoringwascarriedoutfromFebruary/toAugust/2009,takingewatersamplesonamonthlybasisandat8sitesalongthecanal.Thewaterqualityindices(WQI)wereintherange39-29indicatingmildpollutionatthetwositesclosetothejoiningofthecanalwiththeriver,increasingtoseverepollutionalongtherestofthecanal.Itisrecommendedthatthewaterfromthecanalshouldnotbeusedforhumanactivitiesbeforebeingtreatedbyappropriatemethods.Theformulaeusedtocaluclatethewaterqualityindex(WQI)areeasytouse,thusitisavaluabletoolforobservationofthewaterenvironment,andformonitoringofthepollution
