Thispaperpresentsaneconomicanalysisoftheuseofdrugs(isometamidiumanddiminazene)incontrollingAfricanAnimalTrypanosomosis(AAT),aseriousdiseaseofcattleandsmallruminantsinvillagesthatexhibitresistancetoisometamidiuminBurkinaFasoandMaliinWestAfrica.Thestudyappliesaproductionfunctionframeworkintegratingadamagecontrolfunctiontoassesstheshorttermproductivityeffectoftrypanocideuseunderdifferentepidemiologicalconditions.nbsp;Wefoundthatthemarginalvalueproductsofisometamidiuminallepidemiologicalconditions,andthemarginalvalueproductofdiminazeneinhigh-prevalence-high-resistanceconditionsarepositiveandgreaterthanonerevealinganunderuseoftrypanocidaldrugsinthoseconditions.Theeconomicaloptimumlevelofisometamidiumisfarlargerthanthecurrentuselevel.Inastricteconomicinterpretation,thisimpliesthatintheshorttermcattlefarmerscouldincreasetheprofitabilityiftheyincreasetrypanocideinputbeyondcurrentlevels.Ontheotherhand,iftheuseoftrypanocideincreases,cattlefarmerswillalsobemorelikelytoexperiencefuturelossesfromtrypanocideresistance.nbsp;InthispaperwedemonstratedthefeasibilityofapplyingthedamagecontrolframeworkformeasuringtheproductivityofveterinarytherapeuticdrugsatfarmlevelinpoorAfricancountries.
