Silvopastoral systems with isolated timber trees within pastures in the Coffee region of Colombia

TheabundanceofisolatedtimbertreeswithinpastureswasevaluatedinLaViejariverwatershed,locatedinthecoffeeregionofColombia.Ninespecieswereidentified,beingNogal(Cordiaalliodora)themostabundant.PrincipalComponentsandDiscriminantAnalysesshowedthatbiophysicalaswellassocioeconomicvariablesinfluencedthepresenceofisolatedtreeswithinpastures.nbsp;Themostimportantvariablesshowingeffectsonabundanceofisolatedtimbertreeswerealtitude,soilproperties,weedcontrolandcontrolledgrazing.Threegroupsitesdefinedbyclusteranalysisshowedthatthedistributionoftimberspecieschangedaccordingtoecologicalconditionsandtheirabundancewaslimitedbymanagementpracticeswithinpastures.Farmersrecognizedtheecologicalandeconomicimportanceofisolatedtreeswithinpasturesandtheyhavedefinedusesforeachspeciesfound.nbsp;Inthisway,thesespeciescouldbeusedtoestablishsilvopastoralsystemsandcontributetoconvertcattlegrazingtoamoresustainableactivityinthecoffeeregionofColombia
