Small ruminant fasciolosis and its economic impact in an export abattoir of Ethiopia

Thestudywascarriedouttodeterminetheprevalence,theassociationofselectedriskfactorsanddirectrelatedeconomiclossofsmallruminantfasciolosisfromanimalsslaughteredinanexportabattoir.Anti-mortemandpostmortemexaminationofliverweremadefrom768animals(384sheepand384goats).Liverswereexaminedbothvisuallyandclinically.nbsp;Theoverallprevalenceoffasciolosiswas8.1%thataccountedfor11.9%forsheepand4.2%forgoats.BothspeciesofFasciolawereobservedwithahigherrateofFasciolahepatica.Species,bodyconditionandageoftheanimalaretheanimalfactorsassociatedwithfasciolosis.Altitudefortheoriginofanimalsandmonthofthestudywerealsoenvironmentalrelatedfactors.AdultsheepwithathinbodyfromhighlandsofEthiopiawerehighlyinfectedbyfasciolosis.Theseverityofinfectionanddamagetotheliverforinfectedanimalsisslight:however,itresultstotalcondemnationoftheliver.Basedonthecurrentstudy,theeconomiclossoftheabattoirduetototalcondemnationofliversduetofasciolosisis$9720.Thus,fasciolosisstillremainedasmajorparasiticdiseasethatincurredgreateconomiclossofthecountry.
