A note on causes of boar removal in Cuban pig farms

MaincausesofboarremovalwerestudiedinCubancommercialpigfarms.Therewasaselectionatrandomof16pigbreedingfarmscorrespondingtothepigenterprisesofMatanzas,Holguín,Granma,andSantiagodeCuba.Atotalof540breedingboarsfromtheL35,CC21,HxL35,andCC21xL35piggenotypesandonaverage28monthsofagewereevaluated.Breedingsystemwasbynaturalmating.Boarherdsize(small,8and27orlarge,47and58boars)andcausesofboarremoval(endofusefullife,nonreproductiveandreproductiveorigin)wereanalyzedaccordingtoa2x3arrangement.nbsp;Dam/sireratio(15.0to16.8)waslowerthanthatconceived(17.0).Overall,causesofboarremovalduetoreproductivecharacteristicsaccountedfor43.2%,whereasnonreproductivecharacteristicsandendofusefullifeofboarscausedsirereplacementto30.3and26.5%respectively.Neitherherdsizenorcausesofboarremovalweresignificantlydifferent(P0.05)amongtheexaminedpigbreedingfarms.nbsp;ItissuggestedthatperformanceofboarremovalindexshouldperiodicallybeconductedinallpigbreedingfarmsbelongingtoCubancommercialpigfarms.
