Application of natural adsorbents to remove nutrients from swine facility effluent

Confinedswinefacilitiescreategreatenvironmentalconcernduetothegenerationofhighlyconcentratedeffluents.Technologiesappliedforthetreatmentofsuchresidueswereadaptedfromdomesticwastewatertreatmentsystems.However,asswinewastewaterhasaninitialconcentrationwhichismuchhigherthanordinarywastewater,thequalitystandardestablishedbyBrazilianLegislationcannotbereachedthroughusualtreatmenttechnologies,mainlyfornutrients.Thisworkevaluatedtheefficiencyofanaturalclinoptilolite-mordenitezeolitetoremovenitrogenfromsyntheticswineeffluentinpH=5.0;6.0and7.0.nbsp;ItwasdemonstratedthatinthispHrange,therewasnosignificantdifferencesinthekineticofadsorptionfordifferentpHlevels.Additionally,anexperimentwasrunusingswinefacilitieswastewaterpreviouslytreatedinacompactunitResultshaveshownthatzeoliteremoved89%ofN-NH3,88%ofpotassiumand61%ofphosphorusafter60minutes.
