Performance and economic profit of upgrading poor roughages with cottonseed meal in fattening Maure sheep in Mali

TwotrialswereconductedtodeterminetheanimalperformanceandtheeconomicprofitoffatteningtheMauresheep.nbsp;Thefirsttrialwasafeedingone.Twenty-eightramswerewormed,vaccinatedanddividedinto4groupsofsevenheadseach.Eachgroupoframsreceivedrandomlyoneration.Dailyfeedintakewasdetermined.Animalswereweighedatthearrival,attheendoftheadaptationperiodandateveryfifteendaystoevaluatetheweightchanges.Afteranadaptationperiodof10days,thesheepwerefattenedduring66days.Samplesofallthefeedsandortsweretakendailyforlaboratoryanalyses.Datawereanalyzedusingtherandomizedcompletedesign.Averageweightgainfluctuatedfrom100to124g.Thenetprofitsfluctuatedfrom3545to5850F.CFA.nbsp;Thesecondtrial,aninvivodigestibilitytrialwasconductedusingsixteenMaureramsfedtherationsusedinthefirsttrial.Drymatterdigestibilitywaslowestforthesecondgroup,butorganicmatterdigestibilitydidn#8217;tchangewithtreatments.Proteindigestibilitywashighestfortherations4and1.Energydigestibilitywaslowestforration1.Itappearsfromthisstudythatthebestrationistheonecomposedofsorghumstrawandcottonseedmeal.
