Snapper(Lutjanusgoreensis)andGrunter(Pomadasysjubelini)populationsfromahigh(LagosLagoon)andlowbrackishlagoon(BadagryLagoon)werestudiedtoassesstheirgeneticrelationshipusingrandomlyamplifiedpolymorphicDNAanalysis(RAPD)technique.Thisinvolvedtheuseof10-merOPASprimerstoassaypolymorphismsbetweenthetwopopulationsofbothspecies.VaryingRAPDfragmentpatternswereobservedfordifferentlocations.Ofthetwoprimersutilized,onlyoneproduceddistinctandconsistentRAPDprofilesforbothspeciesfromthetwolocations.Forty-nine(49)andthirty-six(36)reproduciblebandsrepresentingslight(25.8%and20.0%)DNApolymorphismsinL.goreensisandP.jubeliniwereuncoveredinpopulationsfrombothlocations.ClusteranalysisperformedtocreatedendrogramsusingUPGMAbythePhyllipsoftwaregavenosufficientgeneticdivergencetodiscriminatethesamplesofdifferentpopulations.Theresultofthisresearchisveryimportantbecauseitpresentsbaselineinformationonthegeneticdiversityofsnappersandgruntersfromthesetwowaterbodies.
