ThepurposeofthisstudywastodescribethecorrelationbetweenrootdevelopmentandcarbonsequestrationofpastureofBrachiariadecumbensandBrachiariahumidicolaassociatedwithlegumeandgrassmonocultures,anddegradedpastureintwodualpurposecattlefarmslocatedonflatandslopeintheColombiantropicalrainforestecosystem.Fortheevaluation996soilsamplesweretakenatdepthsof4,onwhichanalysiswasmadeofcarboncontentusingtheWalkleyandBlack(1934)andwasconductedtodeterminerootbiomass.ThemainresultsshowedthattheBrachiariapastureshumidicolaassociatedwithleguminouscropshavehighercorrelationcoefficientsbetweenweightofcarboncaptureanddegradedpastures.Thevaluesofthecoefficientsare0.78and0.83,foraflattopographyandslope.Thegreaterrootdevelopmentinallgrassesstudied,whichweremanagedwithpermanentpasture,ispresentedinthefirst10cmdeep,6.4and7.0tonnesDMha-1atgroundlevelandsloperespectively.Thesevaluescontrastwiththosefoundforthedepthof10-20forthesametopography,whicharereducedtolessthan1tonDMha-1.Thereisastrongassociationbetweentheweightoffinerootsofpastureimprovedandincreasedquantitiesofcarbonsequestration.
