Financial analysis of livestock production systems around Lake Mburo National Park, in South Western Uganda

FinancialanalysiswasdoneforpastoralandranchlivestockproductionsystemsaroundLakeMburoNationalPark,Uganda.Theagriculturalincomewasfromcattle,goatandcropenterprises.Themajorsourceofagriculturalincomewasfromcattle,accountingfor92.1±4.2%inranchand78.4±7.4%pastoralhouseholds.Milkandcattlelivesalesweremajoroutputsfromthecattleenterprises,withlivesalescontributing47.5±0.2%(ranches)and54.9±2.2%(pastoral);andmilkcontributing47.8±2.5%inranchand45.4±2.4%inpastoralsystems.Manurecontributed4.4±0.8%and2.7±0.6%tototaloutputinranchandpastoralcattleenterprisesrespectively.Themajorinputsincattleenterpriseswerediseasecontrolcontributing44±11%(ranches)and44.2±5.4%(pastoral);andlabourcostscontributing40.7±6.9%(ranches)and44.9±7.5%(pastoral).Thecontributionofgoatstoagriculturalincomeinranchandpastoralhouseholdswas5.5±2.9%and18±8.3%respectively.Meanwhile,cropcontributiontoagriculturalincomewasminor,being2.4±1.3%(ranches)and3.6±1.8%(pastoral).Themajorproportionofagriculturalinputswereusedincattleenterprises,being97.7±1.5%inranchesand92.2%±3.5%inpastoral.Theremainderoftheinputswereincropenterprises.ThemeanannualgrossmarginsfromagriculturalenterprisesforpastoralandranchhouseholdswasUgShs6,246,000±2,511,000(1USD=UgShs1,420)andUg.Shs12,371,000±1,680,000respectively,givinghigherannualreturnsperhectareforpastoralsystems(Ug.Shs108,800±38,000)thantheranchingsystems(Ug.Shs16,300±4,400).
