The effect of breed type and feeding system on yields of edible and saleable components of Somali and Arsi-Bale goats

nbsp;Theslaughterdatafrom27Arsi-Baleand21Somaliintactmalegoatsmanagedunderthreefeedingsystems(viz.intensive,semi-intensiveandextensive)wereanalyzedtodeterminetheinfluenceofgenotypeandfeedingsystemontheedibleandsaleablecomponents.Edibleproportionofliveweightwasobtainedasallbodycomponentsminuspelt,respiratorytract,heart,head,feetandgutcontentwhilesaleableproportionofliveweightwasdefinedasallbodycomponentsexceptfeetandgutcontent.nbsp;Accordingtolocalcriteria,thetotaledibleandsaleablepercentageswere60.2and77.5forSomaliand62.1and80.8forArsi-Balegoats,respectively.Arsi-Balegoatshadsignificantlyhigher(P0.05)edibleandsaleableliveweightsthanSomaligoats.Animalsmanagedundertheintensiveandsemi-intensivefeedingsystemshadstatisticallyhigher(P0.05)edibleandsaleableproportionsofliveweightthantheextensivelymanagedanimals.Thoughbreeddidnotexertsignificantinfluence(P0.05)onbothexternalandinternalnon-carcasscomponents,animalsmanagedextensivelyhadhigher(P0.05)externalnon-carcasscomponentsasaproportionofemptybodyweightthantheanimalsmanagedundertheothertwofeedingsystems.Thehigherproportionofexternalnon-carcasscomponentsthatareinedibleunderEthiopianconditionwastheprimarycauseoftheloweredibleproportionofextensivelymanagedanimals.Significantly(P0.05)highertotalfatweredissectedintheSomalithanintheArsi-Balethatmayindicatetheiradaptationtotheirareaoforiginthathasbeenfacingseasonalfeed-supplyfluctuations.
