Evaluation of dried cassava leaf meal and maize offal as supplements for goats fed rice straw in dry season

NineMaradixWestAfricanDwarfcrossbredgoatsofmixedsexesbetween8-10monthsoldandwithanaveragebodyweightof10kgwereusedtoevaluatemixturesofdriedcassavaleafmealandmaizeoffalasdietarysupplementstoricestrawadlibitum.Theanimalswererandomlyallottedtothreedietarygroupsofthreeanimalseachandeachanimalputinametaboliccage.Thedietswere:dietCL30(70%maizeoffal:30%driedcassavaleafmeal,dietCLM50(50%maizeoffal:50%driedcassavaleafmeal)anddietCLM70nbsp;(30%maizeoffal:70%driedcassavaleafmeal).DailyricestrawintakewassignificantlylowerforgoatsondietCLM30thanforgoatsondietsCLM50andCLM70.Therewerenostatisticaldifferencesinaveragedailygainsandfeedconversionratio(p0.05).GoatsondietCLM50hadadailyweightgainof20.8gwhichisrelativelyhigherthan13.1gand18.6gfordietarygroupsCLM30andCLM70,respectively.GoatsondietCLM30hadasignificantlyhigher(p0.05)apparentdrymatterdigestibilityof64.49%thanthoseondietsCLM50(57.27%)andCLM70(54.01%).Digestibilityofdrymatter,crudeprotein,crudefibreandnitrogenfreeextractdecreasedasdietaryinclusionofdriedcassavaleafmealincreased.TheoptimumlevelofinclusionofCLMinabasaldietofricestrawandmaizeoffalappearstobeoftheorderof20%oftheDMintake,whichisequivalenttoabout1gcrudeprotein(fromtheCLM)per1kgliveweight.
