Leavesfromthreeindigenousmultipurposetreespecies(MPTS)namelyMoringaoleifera,MillettiagriffonianaandPterocarpussantalinoideswererandomlycollectedinJuly,OctoberandDecember2004,torepresentmidwet,latewetandearlydryseasonrespectively.Theleaveswereanalyzedtoestimatethenutrientcompositionandinvitrogasproductionover3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,48,72and96hpostincubation.ThegasvolumesrecordedattheseincubationtimeswerefittedtothemodelP=b(1-e-ct).Influencesofchemicalconstituentsongasproductionwereinvestigated.Cumulativegasreleasedat96hwas35.8ml/200mgDMforMillettiagriffonianawhereasMoringaoleiferaandPterocarpussantalinoidesrecorded32.2and28.7ml/200mgDMrespectively.Thesevalueswerenotsignificant(P0.05).Thehighestvolumeoriginatingfromthe(b)fractionwasrecordedforMillettiagriffoniana(44.9ml/200mgDM)duringthelatewetseasonwhilethelowestvalueforthisfractionwasrecordedforPterocarpussantalinoides(22.5ml/200mgDM)(P0.05)duringthesameseason.Thehighestfractionalrateofgasproduction(c)wasrecordedforPterocarpussantalinoides(0.058ml/h)whereasPterocarpussantalinoidesandMillettiagriffonianabothrecordedthelowestfractionalrateofproductionof0.024ml/hduringthemidwetandlatewetseasonrespectively.Thecorrelationcoefficientsbetweeninvitrogasproductionandthechemicalconstituentsoftheforagesweregenerallynegative.SignificantcorrelationswereobservedintheADFandashcontentsofMoringaoleiferaandPterocarpussantalinoides.TheinvitrogasproductionandthefermentationparametersindicatedthepresenceofpotentiallydegradablenutrientsintheMPTSevaluated.Thisunderscorestheirimportanceassourcesofnutrientsforruminantanimalsespeciallyduringthedryseason.Itisconcludedthattheinvitrogasproductiontechniqueisapotentialwayofevaluatingthenutritionalqualityofforagesconsumedbyruminantanimalsandalsoinvaluableinpredictingnutritivevalueofsomeofourunder-utilizedindigenousbrowseplants.
