Determinants of adoption of poultry technology: a double-hurdle approach

Theobjectiveofthisstudywastodeterminefactorsinfluencingtherateandintensityofadoptionofpoultrytechnology,assumingthetwodecisionsprocesswereseparate.Thedouble-hurdleclassofmodelhasbeenappliedinthispaperwiththisimportantdistinctioninmind.Themodelwasfittedtoasampleof200smallholderfarmersfromeastShewaandWelayetazonesinEthiopia.Resultsindicatethat41.5%ofthestudyfarmersreportedadoptionofexoticpoultrywithameanproportionof0.54.Asexpected,thereweredifferentsetsoffactorsbehindthedecisiontoadoptandthedecisionabouttowhichextenttodoso.Farmers'decisiononadoptionofpoultrytechnologywaspositivelyaffectedbysexofthehouseholdhead,familysize,availabilityofsupplementaryfeed,creditandextensionserviceandextentofexpectedbenefitfrompoultry,andnegativelyaffectedbymarketproblem.Ontheotherhand,farmers'decisionontheextentofadoptionofexoticpoultrybreedwaspositivelyinfluencedbyageofthehouseholdhead,experienceinadoptionofpoultrytechnology,expectedbenefitfrompoultryandnegativelyinfluencedbymarketproblem.
