International development pitfalls and successes: Five case studies from Tanzania

Internationaldevelopmentworkisdesignedtoalleviatepovertyandtoimprovethequalityoflifeinpovertystrickencountries.nbsp;Developmentprojectsrangefromdirectgovernment-to-governmentloanstosmallgrassrootsorganizations.nbsp;Mosthaveacommongoalofimprovingandstabilizingtheeconomy,eitherlocallyorcountrywide,indevelopingnations.nbsp;Veterinarianscanplayacriticalroleindevelopingcountries.nbsp;Developingnationsareprimarilyagriculturalandlivestockplaysakeyroleintheeconomyandoftenintheculture.nbsp;Importantlivestockissuesincludetrans-boundarydiseases,management,nutrition,geneticsandmarketing.nbsp;Veterinariansarealsoimportantforpublichealtheducationconcerningfoodsafetyandzoonoticdiseases.nbsp;FivecasestudiesfromUSPeaceCorpsvolunteersdevelopmentaidprojectsintheIringaregioninTanzaniawerere-examinedbetween3and5yearsafterdonorsupportconcluded.nbsp;Thelessonslearnedincludedtheimportanceofstrongprojectleadership,appropriatetechnologiesandinformation,andcarefulprojectdesign.nbsp;Developmentprojectsindevelopingcountriesfacemanychallengessuchascorruption,relianceondonorfunding,andunforeseeableproblemssuchasweather.nbsp;Nevertheless,mostprojectshavepositiveimpactsincludingeducationaboutmanagementpracticesandtheintroductionofsuperiorphenotypes.
