Fruit characteristics and chemical composition of some varieties of velvet beans (mucuna spp) found in Benue State of Nigeria

FruitsfromsixvarietiesofMucuna(velvetbean)weregatheredfromvariouslocationsinBenueState,northcentralregionofNigeria.Thefruitandseedcharacteristicswerenoted,andtheseedswereanalyzedforaminoacidsandothernutrients,andalsoforcontentoftheanti-nutritionalfactorscommonlyfoundinlegumes.nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Theseedswerefoundtocontain(g/100gdrymatter)27-29crudeprotein,5-9crudefat,3-4crudefibre,4ash,46-50NFEand4kcal/ggrossenergy.nbsp;nbsp;Mineralcontent(%)estimateswere:nbsp;phosphorus0.18-0.59,calcium0.45-0.94,sodium0.08-0.14,magnesium0.17-0.46.Otherestimates(mg/kg)formineralsincludednbsp;iron130.7-135,manganese44.53-85.57,copper11.90-17.40andzinc73.9-114.nbsp;Themucunaseedswerefoundtocontaincomparativelyhighamountsofcriticalaminoacidssuchaslysine(5.51-6.52%),cysteine(0.95-1.32%)andmethionine(1.18-1.34%).nbsp;Anti-nutrientfactorcontentestimateswere:L-3,4dihydroxyphenylalanine(L-Dopa)nbsp;4.75-6.27%;tannin0.12-0.25%;phytate0.08-0.22%;oxalate0.01-0.03%;saponin0.21-0.74%;alkaloids1.22-2.30%;HCN5.3-13.4mg/kg;trypsininhibitors8.3-31.4Tui.nbsp;Thehighcontentofnitrogenandverygoodessentialaminoacidprofileoftheseedssuggestthattheycouldserveasmajorsourcesofessentialnutrientstolivestock.nbsp;Mucunacochinchinensis(mottled)andMucunapruriensseemtobethemostpromisingforfeedingmonogastricanimals,sincetheycontaincomparativelylowerlevelsofanti-nutrients.
