Transforming village poultry systems into small agro-business ventures: a partnership model for the transfer of livestock technologies in Ethiopia

AnactivitywasinitiatedonenhancingpartnershipsfortransferringtechnologiestochangethetraditionalapproachestoimprovingvillagepoultryproductioninEthiopiabymakinguseofexistingcommercializationpotentialsinsuitableareas.Farmersintheperi-urbanvillagesofAda,AkakiandLumeWeredaswereselected,trainedandprovidedwithcredittocarryoutsmallscaleintensivepoultryproductionbasedona100bird-unitbyutilizingacomprehensivepackageoftechnologies.Amulti-institutionalpartnershipframeworkwasproposedbytheDebreZeitAgriculturalResearchCenterwhichwasdiscussedandendorsedbycollaboratinginstitutionsandparticipantfarmersinajointworkshopheldtoplantheprojectarrangementsanddelineaterolesandresponsibilities.Theresultsachievedthroughthisworkindicatedtheneedtotransformthetraditionalpiecemealapproachofpoultrytechnologytransferintopromotionofcarefullyselectedandpackagedtechnologiesinamulti-institutionalframeworkwithdueconsiderationoftheinput-outputmarketifthepotentialroleofpoultryresearchindevelopmentistoberealized.
