Society, agriculture or forest to preserve environment in the peri-urban space in Milpa Alta at the South of Mexico City

Thephenomenonoftheuseofspaceisofvitalimportanceforresearchersstudyingcityagricultureduetotheneedtosetoutpublicpoliciesthatmaintainthecurrentsystemoflanduse.Recentlyhowever,thegovernmentofMexicoCityhasdeclaredMilpaAlta,alongwithotherdelegations,asanareaforecologicalprotection.Althoughinitiallythislegislationcouldbeconsideredimportant,atthepresenttimethereisatendencytoimposeconservationpolicieswhichrestrictagriculturalactivityandatthesametimegeneratesocialproblemsamongstthelocalruralpopulation.nbsp;Theprocedureusedtostudythesystemincludeddirectinterviewswithsmallscalefarmersintheareawiththeaimofestablishingthesocial,technologicalandeconomicalfactorsinvolvedinlocalproduction.Producerswereselectedatrandomonthebasisoftheirvisiblepresenceinthefieldsorinvolvementinagriculturallyrelatedhouseholdactivitiesinthefivevillageswithinthezoneknownas“terraces”.Theresultsreportedinthepresentresearchdemonstratedthatthesmallscalefarmersoftheperi-urbanspaceofMilpaAltabehave“ecologically”andmakerationaluseoftherenewableresourcesthatbringsthemclosetothedemandsforsustainabilityrequiredforanecologicallyprotectedarea.
