Evaluation of the sustainability of sheep production systems in the Djelfa Wilaya steppes

Theconceptofsustainableagricultureintegratesthreemaingoals:ecologicalintegrity,socialequitybetweennations,individualsandgenerations,andeconomicalefficiency.Tomeettheseaims,variousmethodstoassessagriculturalsustainabilityhavebeenproposed.Amongthem,theIDEAmethod(IndicateursdeDurabilitédesExploitationsAgricoles=IndicatorsoftheDurabilityofFarms)isbasedon37indicators.Theseareconstructedapplyingthreemajorscales:agroecological,socioterritorialandeconomical.nbsp;Theapplicationofthismethodon27ovinesexploitationsintheAlgeriansteppe(wilayaofDjelfa),providedinformationontheirlevelofsustainability.Resultsalsohighlightedstrengthsandweaknessoftheseexploitationsandenabledtotestthereliabilityofthemethodinanenvironmentasdifficultasthesteppe.
