Extension educational efforts by State Department of Animal Husbandry (SDAH), Tamil Nadu: SWOT analysis

Animalhusbandryanddairydevelopmentplaysaprominentroleintheruraleconomybysupplementingtheincomeofruralhouseholds.ThemajoragencyresponsibleforlivestockdevelopmentistheStateDepartmentofAnimalHusbandry(SDAH).Keepingthisinview,SWOTanalysisofSDAH,TamilNadustate,Indiawasdonewithrespecttoitsextensioneducationrole.ThestudywasbasedontheinformationavailablethroughannualreportsofSDAH,informationelicitedfromDirector,VeterinaryAssistantSurgeons(VASs),LivestockInspectors(LIs)oftheSDAHandLivestockowners(LOs).Themajorparameterslikeorganizationstructure,clarityregardingextensionfunctions,infrastructurefacilities,numberofveterinaryinstitutions,sensitivityandpromotionofextensionprogrammes,in-servicetrainingprogrammes,levelofcontactbyLivestockownersandnumberofveterinarypersonnel'sweretakenintoaccount.Theresultsindicatethatthoughthetoplevelhierarchyhadclearroleperceptiontowardsextensioneducationalefforts,duetoinadequateinfrastructurefacilities,poorleveloftrainingtowardsextensionprogrammeandlackofpersonneldiminishedanyextensionservicetotheLOs.LOsontheotherhandwithoutanygenderprejudicedependontheseveterinaryinstitutionsnotonlyfortheanimalhealthconcernsbutalsodemandingmorelivestockrelatedinformation.
