Anon-farmexperimentwasconductedinruralareasofBangladeshforaperiodof16weekstoassesstheeffectofsupplementingtwoenergylevels(2900and2500kcalME/kgdiet),eachattwoproteinlevels(19and15%)with60gfeeddailyonproductionperformanceandeggqualityofscavenginghens.Inaddition,theperformanceofhensunderfullyscavengingwascomparedtosupplementaryfeedcondition.NinetycrossbredSonali(RhodeIslandRedxFayoumi)hensof26weeksweredistributedamong18farmerswith5birdseach,referringeachbirdtoeachof5groups:Group1(2900kcal/kgand19%CP);Group2(2900kcal/kgand15%CP);Group3(2500kcal/kgand19%CP);Group4(2500kcal/kgand15%CP),andGroup5(fullyscavengingwithoutfeedsupplementation).Feedsupplementationsignificantly(P0.01)improvedbodyweightgain,eggproduction,eggweight,eggmassoutputandshellthicknesscomparedtonofeedsupplementation.Hen-houseeggproductionwas39.3,35.9,38.4,35.2and24.3%forgroups1,2,3,4and5,respectively.Chemicalanalysisofthefeedmixturesshowedthattheenergycontentofthehighenergyexperimentaldietswas5-7%lowerthanstipulated,andexpressedintermsofenergy,theproteincontentwas183,140,194,and144g/10MJMEofGroups1,2,3,and4,respectively.Thehighproteinlevel(Group1and3)significantly(P0.01)increasedhen-houseeggproduction,eggweight,eggmass,feedefficiencyandshapeindex(P0.05),butdepressedshellthickness(P0.05)comparedtolowproteinlevel(Group2and4).Thebirdsfedthedietwiththestipulatedhighenergylevels(Group1and2)hadasignificantlyimprovedeggweight(P0.01)andshapeindex(P0.05)comparedtobirdsinGroups3and4.
