Abstract Garden peas (cv. ‘Victory Freezer’) were grown in all combinations of 10, 20, and 30 cm row widths, and 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 cm intra-row spacings, giving populations ranging from 36 to 371 plants/m2. Yields of green peas increased with decreasing row width and/or intra-row spacing, and were highest at the narrowest spacing. Changes in row width gave greater responses than changes in intra-row spacing. Where plant populations were similar, yields were greater where spatial arrangement approached “on the square” planting. As plant population increased, vine length, full pods per plant, and peas per pod all decreased. At lower populations maturity was delayed 3 days and there were more flat pods and immature peas. Practical implications of these results are discussed.
