The distribution and relative importance of some armoured scale insects on pip fruit in the Nelson/Marlborough orchards during 1959/60

Abstract All scale insects intercepted on pip fruit at inspection depots during the 1959/60 season were examined. Four species of scales of the family Diaspididae were identified. These were San José scale (Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comst.)), Parlatoria pittospori Mask., mussel scale (Lepidosaphes ulmi (L.)), and circular black scale (Lindingaspis rossi (Mask.)). Their occurrence and distribution are discussed. L. rossi is recorded on apple fruit for the first time in New Zealand. Some notes on the life cycle of L. rossi and records of additional hosts are given.
