Abstract A simple simulation model for nitrogen (N) transformations and fluxes during the growth of a barley crop is discussed. The model is based on data from small-scale experiments. It simulated the N transformations observed in a large-scale field study with fair success. This indicates that small-scale experiments, and models developed from them, are likely to have direct application on a field scale. Use of the model is illustrated by simulation of the effect of excessive rain early in the season on crop N uptake. The value of the model in determining the fertiliser N requirements of crops is also discussed.
