Identification and seed multiplication of a collection of Vicia and Lathyrus from southwest Europe

Abstract Seventy‐four accessions of Vicia and Lathyrus collected from southwest Europe, five from Turkey, and one from Ecuador were identified and described. Twenty‐three accessions previously identified served as a set of controls. For each accession the breeding system was observed and seed was multiplied. These accessions were classified into 14 species, 5 subspecies, and 2 varieties. Seed and seedling characters were recorded. The subspecies of Vicia sativa L. recorded in this study had good seed production potential. The seeds of most species were harvested and have been stored in the Margot Forde Forage Germplasm Centre, AgResearch Grasslands, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
