Abstract A diazinon-based ‘pour-on’ insecticide (Compass?) rapidly removed the sheep-biting louse, Bovicola ovis, from moderately infested newly shorn sheep. The insecticide protected some sheep against reinfestation by the louse for about 8 – 10 weeks after treatment and prevented the establishment of the sheep ked, Melophagus ovinus, for about 9 weeks. A synthetic pyrethroid pour-on insecticide (Cypor?) gradually removed biting lice from some, but not all, unshorn sheep over a 7-week period, with residual protection lasting for between 8 and 10 weeks after treatment. It prevented the establishment of the sheep ked for about 9 weeks after treatment.
