Sampling errors associated with gravimetric soil moisture determinations

Abstract The results of several years' sampling for soil moisture determination under permanent pasture have been analysed to evaluate the likely sampling errors. The results show: 1. Between 14 per cent and 34 per cent soil moisture the 95 per cent confidence limits are ± 1.3 per cent for the mean of 6 cores. 2. Between 10 per cent and 14 per cent the 95 per cent confidence limits are ±1.0 per cent for the mean of 6 cores. 3. Lower than 10 per cent the precision is still greater.
